íHola!
I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a Spanish immersion course in Malaga, Spain during the Easter holidays. This was to refresh and improve my Spanish language skills and to improve my expertise in the teaching of Spanish to young learners. Schools are expected to expand and improve language learning as part of the 1+2 Modern Languages initiative introduced by the Scottish government. From 2021, every child will learn two languages in addition to English and will continue learning these languages until the end of S3.
Due to this initiative, children at our school are learning French from nursery and Spanish from P5.
As well as learning languages, children are expected to develop cultural awareness and understanding of other countries. To this end, P6b have become involved an eTwinning project with a school in Palencia, Spain. eTwinning is an online community which allows schools in Europe to find partners and work together on projects within a secure network and platform. Our project is called ‘This is my City’ and involves the children creating an information file about themselves and their city in Spanish to share with the Spanish school. The children in the Spanish school are preparing to share similar information about themselves and their city in English. Therefore, the children are practising their foreign language skills and learning more about the other school and the children there. Well done, P6b!
