P7b Learning Log 27th January 2017

Maths

This week in maths we were learning how to create a business stall (enterprise) for fundraising for our own choice of charity. Miss Milne – (Lord Sugar) will be selecting a few groups to go forward and make their ideas a reality!

We are going to partner up with P7a and hopefully make some food items to sell around the school.

P.E

This week on Tuesday we completed a variety of gymnastics including; cartwheels, leaps over vaults, and different balances! On Thursday we had S6 helpers from Leith Academy! We didn’t have access to the hall so we played a selection of different running games outside in the playground; Run River and Tig. Our teachers on Thursday were Liam and Mr. Marco. On Tuesday we had Mrs. Mclaughlin!

Art

This week in art we had a challenge of making a clay model of Robert Burns’ cottage. We had a block of clay and had to work against the clock to create our own masterpieces in one hour! This went really well and almost everyone completed the activity. When our models are dry we will paint them according to the photographs of Robert Burn’s cottage.

Literacy

This week we completed the second part of our Tam O’Shanter story map. We had to draw pictures according to the story we listened to. Next we will be using our story maps to tell the story of Tam.

Outdoor learning

This week we had a visitor in school to teach us about area and perimeter but approaching it in a different way! Mr. Robinson gave us each a rope with the same length which we had to make into different shapes and calculate the area by using 10cm squares of paper. This proved that no matter the length of the perimeter the area will always be different! This was more fun than working in jotters!

 Cross Country Trials!

The teams were selected and from p7b the people who got in were;

Ava, Logan, Maddie, Alice, Arwen, Ruby, Harry & Joe. Well done!

ART

In art we have been looking at Op Art which is a style of art that uses optical illusion.

In maths, we have been studying the properties of circles. We drew our circles using pairs of compasses which was quite tricky for some of us!

SAMBA DRUMMING

When I heard about the samba drumming, I wasn’t excited but it was actually great fun. My drum was a smallish tall drun called a High Surdo which made a low sound. I enjoyed the samba drumming because it was fun and diverse. I also considered joining the samba drumming club but I am busy at the time it starts. Overall I enjoyed this.

Rowyn

I was really excited to get a chance to do the samba drumming. The tutors were Rohan and Steve and they were really nice. The drum I played was the Casha, a Brazilian drum. I think I participated really well. My ability to follow the tutors while playing the Casha was great. I enjoyed it so much. I’m starting the drum club.

Olivia
I was playing the Low Surdo. It was really good because I’ve only ever played the drum twice. It was the biggest drum there! I had to play a beat. The beat was Scotland 10 Germany 1. I liked Rohan the best. It was really loud and really fun. I loved it. All the drums were different colours and Arwen had her own.

September

The Christmas cards went well this week because we all finished them. We made them early so that our families could order them in time for sending out at Christmas. Also it was good because we got to do what designs we wanted to do.

We started fitness on Tuesday with Mrs McLaughlin and on Thursday with Miss Milne. We created our own station as part of a fitness circuit.

In maths some of us started learning about bearings which is used by sailors, pilots and more when following directions. I thought it was very confusing at first but then you pick up on it and understand it better.  Our next steps are to try and get better at doing bearings in maths and the other groups’  next steps are to work  more on coordinates.

*I think the Christmas cards went well.

* P.E. The fitness is good because it is good exercise.

I think this week could have been better if we had finished everything.

Dazzle Ships’

Dioramas

For our Dazzle Ship topic we have been researching facts about the ships. Here are some of the facts which we have found out.

Maths

In maths, the Octagons have been learning about scale. They decided to make models of the Leith Dazzle Ship. They used a diagram of the ship and measured the length and height of it. The models they are currently making are half the size of the diagram. They also wanted to make them out of plasticine. These are photos of progress so far.

We have finished our dazzle ships now and showed them to Helena who works for the City Art Centre who comissioned the Leith Docklands Dazzle Ship. We also showed Mrs Penman, our head teacher, and she said they were a great version of active maths. we also thought that it was a great challenge and we should do it more often!

LOOSE PARTS PLAY – I found it great fun because my group made a humongous den, with RUBY , AVA, MADDIE,  ALICE,  ME, LOGAN, EMILY,  KHADIJA , JOE,  HARRY and ROWYN.   We also made a big marble run for the balls.

MENTAL MATHS – I LIKE  MENTAL MATHS BECAUSE  IT IS  A WARM UP   FOR  THE BRAIN BUT ON  MONDAYS I HATE  IT  BECAUSE MY BRAIN DOESN’T WORK ON A MONDAY.

TIMELINE- I FOUND DOING THE TIMELINE A FUN, ARTSY, HISTORY LESSON WITH ADDED OOMPH.  I REALLY ENJOYED WORKING ON THIS WITH LOGAN AS WE ARE VERY SIMILAR AND WE CAME UP WITH EXCITING IDEAS.  WE GOT OUR DAZZLE SHIP INFO FINISHED AND WE GOT TO DO A SECOND ONE ON THE DARIEN DISASTER.  I FOUND THIS A FABULOUS SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON WHICH TAUGHT ME ABOUT THE HISTORY OF LEITH DOCKLANDS.

RUBY

This week I have learned to correctly rotate, reflect and do translation of shapes. I need to listen a bit more and concentrate a little more.     Jake

My learning successes were maths because I did very well at rotating shapes. I think I need to get quicker at answering maths’ questions quicker. Sophie

One of my successes was in maths- rotating and symmetry because I found it easy. In rotation you really had to think if it could fit into itself. In science, even though we have just started the topic, I have learnt a lot like bacteria is in yeast and yoghurt.  Louis

I thought rotation was hard because you need to get a shape and then turn it and see where it will land. Mental maths has been good because the multiplication has been easier for me.  Destiny

This week we started some science on micro-organisms. I don’t really understand everything yet but I want to learn more. Ava

I think the mental maths computer program is really helping me with my maths because we do it every morning and it is gradually helping me get better at my maths.  Maddie

NOVEMBER

Buddying- P2

My buddy, Nina, and I made a poster on the emotion, Excitement. We drew some pictures and words that showed excitement. Nina and I had a lot of fun. I felt we both worked hard.

Logan

When I was with my buddy we created a poster about being ‘excited’ and my buddy Finlay drew a picture of what makes us excited. We wrote a sentence beside it to tell the people viewing the poster why that makes us excited. I think Finlay was a bit quiet but we both enjoyed it.

Sophie

With my buddy we were making excited masks. It was fun and we wrote a sentence about when we get excited.

Louis

My P2 buddy Dan and I had so much fun. We made mouth masks showing an excited mouth. After that we wrote what makes us excited. I wrote Christmas makes me excited because I like to give presents to other people.

SPORTSHALL

ATHLETICS

Today we went to the Sportshall Athletics’ trial at Meadowbank Stadium. The competition will be at the end of November. There were field trials and relays. I learnt to work as a team and at the end of the last race our team came in first place. I think that I did very well and did my best. Thank you to Mrs Gray for taking us. 100/100

Ava

Scottish SPCA

We were visited by the SSPCA. We learnt about how to look after and animals in our environment. Some of us even learnt about animals we had never heard of before. We really enjoyed the animal quiz at the end.

Buddying with P2

We met up with our P2 buddies again. This time we were discussing the emotion ‘Fear’. We watched some clips of ‘Inside Out’ and the character Fear in it. With our buddies we drew pictures of Fear and wrote about what makes us scared, how we feel and how we stop ourselves feeling scared.

November

I was successful at learning about function machines although some parts are still a little confusing. Spanish was good and I could count up to 50 and talk about people. I am going to improve my learning by practising my tables for the function machines.   Emily

Music went well this week because we got to make our own music and our own sound effects.  Khadija

My learning success this week was my spelling. I did well with the words. I also did well when making the dazzle art pictures on the famous Scottish women.    Lavine

PE this week was really fun because we did football with the S6 leaders. I scored 2 goals and saved some shots. I also learnt that some people that don’t like it were actually very good. Craig

I think I was successful at writing the biography as it was very interesting to hear about the famous Scottish women.  Rowyn

Scottish Gas Visit

We had a visit from Scottish Gas. They came to discuss energy we use at home, fossil fuels and renewable energy. We worked in groups to complete activities about different energies.

My learning success this week was when the Scottish Gas people came in and taught us about how gas is made and that it will run out.   Logan

During the Scottish Gas visit I did well at answering the questions during the Smartboard activity on different types of energy.  Olivia
In science we are testing out different types of bread and how quickly mould will appear on them. Some groups had their bread in dark places, some in warm places and some in cooler places.

I think science has been a success because I think mould will grow on the bread quickly.  Sophie

Science was successful as my group worked well together and our bread was looking interesting. Ruby

MICRO-ORGANISMS

We began our science topic on Micro-organisms. We created an experiment using yeast, water and sugar. We had a bottle filled with warm water and one filled with cold water. We mixed in the sugar and yeast and attached a balloon to the neck of the bottle.

IMG_0451
IMG_0455

RESULTS

The balloons with the warm water quickly began to inflate. The yeast mixture produced carbon dioxide which inflated them.

IMG_0460

The mixture with the cold water did not inflate straight away but the next morning we found that the balloons had inflated.
