P7a Christmas Truffles

Angie Edwardson (Aleena’s mum) very kindly came in to help us make some Christmas Truffles.  It was very kind of her to give up her time and donate the ingredients to allow us to make them.  We had lots of fun making them and some of us enjoyed some of our truffle at lunchtime.

“They were really tasty!” Erin

“I’m going to try and make them when I get home!” James

“When life gives you chocolate, you make truffles!” Findlay

“They were really fun to make!” Amy S

We would all like to say a huge big thank you to Angie for teaching us how to make these truffles and for the amazing truffle we all got to make.

We hope you have a wonderful Christmas everyone!

P7a Christmas Advent Calendars

Our homework task last week was to design and create a Christmas Advent Calendar for us to use in the classroom.

We really enjoyed getting to use our imaginations and being creative with this homework task.

We hope you enjoy looking at our advents as much as we will enjoy opening them on the lead up to Christmas…

P7a Loose Parts Play with Smart Play Network

On Thursday 6th October we had a visit from Smart Play Network.  Two play workers brought some equipment for us to experiment and play with.  We enjoyed using our imaginations and being creative to help us build dens, ball runs and much much more.

You can clearly see from the photos how much fun we are having.

We hope to have some loose parts play equipment of our own very soon so we can enjoy doing this on a more regular basis.

P7a December 2016 Learning Logs

Thursday 15th December 2016

This week I learned about volume in maths. Volume is like area but you measure the width, length and the breadth. My group was doing composite shapes and I got all the questions right.

I enjoyed the coding this week because me and my friends figured out how to make computer art. I also liked making truffles because I really like truffles and I like baking.

This week I found algebra in maths quite hard because algebra is a completely new thing and it is quite confusing and challenging.

Thursday 8th December 2016

Math – This week I have started to learn about volume.  We main 3D shapes out of cubes and find the volume.  We also did some textbook work

Home work – For homework we are starting to research for our Personal Project.  We are looking at different countries.  I am researching Spain.  The other countries are France, Brazil, Australia, China and India.

Christmas – We all made an advent calendar for homework last week so now we open the calendar every day until we leave school and you can swap with other people as well.

Bag backing – We went to Tesco to do some bag packing to raise money for our end of term celebrations.  We helped people to pack their bags in Tesco in Leith and that was really fun.  It was ok until there was loads of people that was A LOT HARDER.  We raised loads of money.

Art – Next week we are going to make sock Santa’s.  Last year we made sock Snowmen and it was so much fun.  Hopefully making the Santa’s will be just as much fun!

PE – PE with Mrs McLaughlin was great fun.  We did dance, well I did not because I’m injured but everyone else did, but we ran towards the other person that was across from us and we did a cool move like a cart wheel.

Reading – We worked on our book called ‘Our City’.  Everyone is enjoying reading it because it is based on Edinburgh and it is so so so so fun and I think we just choose a different story randomly.

Thursday 1st December 2016

This week I enjoyed doing literacy/reading.  We read one of the short stories from a book called ‘Our World’ and the story that we read is called ‘Caught Red handed’.  I learnt it is not about punishing people it’s about taking responsibility for your own actions.  We sat on the carpet and looked in the book for good sentences to turn into questions.  I enjoyed doing this because it is different to what we normally do and it was fun.  I learnt how to turn a sentence into a detailed question.

In PE we learned some Hip hop/Street dance, dance moves. I learnt a move called tuting, tuting is when you move your hands and arms in lots of different ways.  I also learnt how to do the moon walk.  I really enjoyed our PE lesson.

In maths we are learning about area.  I still need to work on multiplying numbers with .5 like 3.5 or 6.5.  Next time we do maths I would like to understand it more so that I can answer more questions.

P7a November 2016 Learning Logs

Friday 25th November 2016

This week in maths we have been learning about perimeter and area.  I learned that to find the area of a rectangle you have to multiply the length and breadth. To find the perimeter you add all the sides together.

Also on Thursday we went to the Risk Factory for the whole day.  We worked through 10 different scenarios and learned about the risks involved.  I learned a lot.  One of the things I learned was that if you go under lots of hay it could fall on you and you could suffocate.

I need to keep working on area and perimeter because I keep getting them confused!

This week I enjoyed the Risk Factory because I learned a lot and I want to go back and do it again!

Thursday 17th November 2016

This week in maths I have enjoyed doing the square maths with the Maths Students (experts).  I enjoyed this activity because I liked finding the squares inside of a 3 by 3 square but it was made out of dots

..       ..        .. Just like that and you would draw as many squares

..       ..        ..  as you could but the squares have to be different

..       ..        .. or  it won’t count.  After that we got these little squares and we made pictures with them and I made a big mac.  I also made a word and all it said was ‘Smile’ because I think if you smile then you won’t have any worries in life.

On Monday we had P.E with Mrs Gray I really enjoyed it because I love P.E and right now we’re doing athletics because we have sports hall athletics and I made the team for the competition.  On Wednesday with Mrs McLaughlin we practised the events and then we found out who made the team.  Today we had a treat because Miss Milne’s class had an Energy workshop so we got their P.E time with the S6 Leaders.  We played basketball, which was great fun!

It was a good week.

Thursday 10th November 2016

This week in maths we learned about perimeter. Perimeter is the distance around the edge of a shape.  To work out the length of it you have to measure the sides and add the numbers up.  I understand how to find the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes.

In science I have learned what micro-organisms are. They are as the name says tiny (micro) living things (organisms).  There are 3 main kinds of micro-organisms: viruses, bacteria and fungi. We are making a flap book about it.

This week a man from SSPCA come in to tell us about his job. He told us some stories about looking after and caring for animals.  At the end we played a card game where he asked us questions about the animals and I won most of the cards.

This week I enjoyed art with Mrs Firth even though we didn’t do much. We are making a world map, everyone got a bit to draw.  I got Europe.  I am looking forward to carrying on with this next week.

P7a October 2016 Learning Logs

Thursday 27th October 2016

This week I have learned how to search for my spelling words in a dictionary.  Some of my words were ‘infectious’ and ‘victorious’.  I like it and I can use a dictionary properly now and not just skip pages till I get to the right page.

I need to get better at symmetry because I only completed a couple of questions on the symmetry work.  I am getting better but still find a few of them quite confusing.  I need to stop talking as well and get more work done.

I enjoyed subtracting in mental maths at the start of day and I am okay at maths.  Tomorrow I am going to challenge myself and do the hardest column to learn more and push myself.

By Aidan

Thursday 13th October 2016

This week in maths we have been learning about symmetry. I found it fun because in one of our lessons we got to draw another half of a drawing and it had to be symmetrical.  I had lots of fun in maths this week. My next steps in maths are to draw more symmetrical patterns and pictures.

Also in P.E we are doing fitness.  This week it was fun because we had lots of different stations and we didn’t just have easy ones we also had ones that we had to push ourselves in.  My next steps in P.E are to push myself a lot harder.

Thursday 6th October 2016

This week in maths we learned about coordinates (24, 12).  We learned about how to draw a grid with an x and y axis.  We learned how to mark a point on the grid and how to join them together and make a shape or a picture.  I drew a house for one of my questions.

This week in literacy we revised how to find a word in a dictionary to find the meaning. We also learned about internet safety so that when we are on a social network site we know how to be safe. We discussed the main safety points and we decided that 1) We should only be friends with/speak to someone we have physically met because if we have not met them we don’t know them, they could be anyone. 2) You must have your settings set so only friends or family can see your posts.

This week in topic we made a mobile about dazzle ships using the facts we researched last week.

This week I enjoyed the loose parts play because we got be creative and use our imaginations.  I made a den with my friends and we also made a ball run.  We would really like to have it again and we are going to try and get our own loose part play equipment to have in school.

P7a September 2016 Learning Logs

Thursday 22nd September 2016

In maths we have been learning about bearings. I have learned what a bearing is and you need to know what the angle is to know the bearing. Here is an example, angle : 45 degrees, bearing : 045 degrees.  The bearing always has to be measure clockwise from North and have 3 digits. It is important that I know this because I will need to know what the bearing of an angle is.  My next step is to be able to use bearings to read a map.

In PE I have learned how to do a small rally with someone that is the same level as me. Also, I got a trophy for improving the most in our racquets block in PE.  It is important that I know this because if I am in a real game I know how to do a rally. My next steps are to do a longer rally.  My highest score is 20 with Millie.

Thursday 15th September 2016

This week in Maths we were learning about 8 point rose compasses. I learnt that in between North, South, East and West there is North East, North West, South East and South West.

It is important that I know this so that if I am lost I know the directions on a compass or if I have to do this again.

My next steps are to be able to read and follow directions with an eight point compass.

This week in Daily Mile we were working on stamina and good pacing.

Good pacing is important because you need to be able to be able to run for a long time and not get too tired. Stamina is important because it keeps you going for a long time.

My next steps are to be able to run a bit faster and for longer.

Thursday 8th September 2016

In maths I have learned how to identify angles using the names acute, obtuse, right, straight and reflex.  I have also learned how to measure angles using a protractor.

In P.E I learned how to do a drop shot in badminton.  A drop shot is when you hit the shuttle just over the net and when your opponent is far away from the net and if they get to it you can do the smash shot the smash shot is when you hit the shuttle really hard to the ground.

In our topic we are learning about the Dazzle Ships and Leith docklands.

In enjoyed going to the computer suite to play sum dog because it helps you to get better at your maths.

Thursday 1st September 2016

In maths this week I have learned how to use a protractor to draw an angle.

It is important I know how to do this because we need to learn how to measure things in the future when I get a job.

My next steps are to be able to draw a reflex angle.

In Literacy this week I have learned about different types of VCOP.

It is important I know this because if we are going to get a job we need to know how to use good vocabulary and punctuation correctly.

My next steps are to up-level my work using good VCOP.
