P5b Learning Log 6.2.17

MATHS

This week we have been busy doing some more about time. We had to look at the written time and then say what time it would be in the time trail after we added more time to the starting point. Our challenge was to make up our own time trail for a partner to solve. Our group also did 3 digit addition to get to an amount already written.

Metaphors and Similes – Literacy

We were using similes and metaphors to make posters.  Similes are  saying something is like or as something else. ( e.g. Tom is as slow as a turtle.) A metaphor is saying something is something else but not literally. ( e.g. time is money.) We made a blurb using similes and metaphors. The blurb was about a scary incident that happened to us.

Health and Wellbeing

We were being food detectives. We learnt that our daily sugar limit is 24 grams. Too much sugar may cause diabetes or some cancers or heart disease. We looked at the sugar in different food with a sugar smart app.

Art

We are each taking a piece of a Japanese painting and creating a class mural. We are looking at line shape and colour. We are learning to sketch our pictures before painting them with water colours.

P4a Learning Log -30th January – 3rd February 2017

Big Writing – we all wrote to Mrs Penman about our museum trip. Some of us tried to use paragraphs in our writing.  It was fun.

This week in Social Studies we learned about Ancient Egyptian Gods. We had to find facts about them. We also had to find out about Tutankhamun and create a booklet.

We had fun learning about similes and metaphors. We listened to examples in pop music and in a group we had to find similes and metaphors and say what they meant.

We are all learning about the time and how to read it on analogue and digital clocks. We had to plan cinema trips or work out how long things take.

p4b Learning Log Jan 31st-Feb 3rd

This week in Maths we worked on our 6 and 7 times tables. We use the smart board app Multilplication Bingo. We have also been using the empty number line to work out two digit addition and subtraction.

In Literacy this week we wrote a letter to the National Museum of Scotland for our Big Writing  lesson. We talked all about our trip to the museum and said how much we enjoyed it.

We have been reading the novel Charlie and the Chocolate factory and we love it!! This week we got to design our own Wonka chocolate bars. We designed the cover and included what flavour bar we wanted.

Our new Science topic is Weather. This week we learned about how rain water is formed. We all found it very interesting! We then made our own weather information booklets and we will work on these over the next few weeks adding more of what we learn. This week we looked at the water cycle. We learned new terminology such as evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

For our last lesson on our Ancient Egypt topic, we had to design posters and present a drama to the class about the mummification process. Here we are using our best acting skills!

P5b Learning Log

Literacy :

We have been learning how to use speech marks and then turning direct speech into indirect speech. We used two characters to make up a conversation. We made notes for a debate – our debate was whether it would be a good thing to sail around the world with your family for one year. We had a good discussion remembering to take turns and listen to everyone’s opinion.

Maths:

We are rounding large numbers and adding and subtracting with 2 and 3 digit numbers. We are using exchange and borrowing. In our Time lessons we have been estimating how long it takes to do an activity and then finding out if we estimated correctly. This will help us to plan things that we do everyday.

Project:

Our project this term is going to be about the novel Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Murpurgo. It is about a boy who sails around the world with his family, but it does not all go to plan!!!

Art:

We have been looking at a painting by Hokusai – a Japanese painter. We then made our own paintings using cold and hot colours.

Class Trip:

We went on a trip to the National Library to study maps. For our project we have made maps of our lives and we will be plotting Michael’s trip around the world from the novel.

We looked at how the area around our school has changed when we went to the library.

Beverley showed us round the exhibition and told us about all the different kinds of maps people make.

We are really looking forward to working some more with Miss MacRae, who will be teaching us for some of this term.

P7b Learning Log 27th January 2017

Maths

This week in maths we were learning how to create a business stall (enterprise) for fundraising for our own choice of charity. Miss Milne – (Lord Sugar) will be selecting a few groups to go forward and make their ideas a reality!

We are going to partner up with P7a and hopefully make some food items to sell around the school.

P.E

This week on Tuesday we completed a variety of gymnastics including; cartwheels, leaps over vaults, and different balances! On Thursday we had S6 helpers from Leith Academy! We didn’t have access to the hall so we played a selection of different running games outside in the playground; Run River and Tig. Our teachers on Thursday were Liam and Mr. Marco. On Tuesday we had Mrs. Mclaughlin!

Art

This week in art we had a challenge of making a clay model of Robert Burns’ cottage. We had a block of clay and had to work against the clock to create our own masterpieces in one hour! This went really well and almost everyone completed the activity. When our models are dry we will paint them according to the photographs of Robert Burn’s cottage.

Literacy

This week we completed the second part of our Tam O’Shanter story map. We had to draw pictures according to the story we listened to. Next we will be using our story maps to tell the story of Tam.

Outdoor learning

This week we had a visitor in school to teach us about area and perimeter but approaching it in a different way! Mr. Robinson gave us each a rope with the same length which we had to make into different shapes and calculate the area by using 10cm squares of paper. This proved that no matter the length of the perimeter the area will always be different! This was more fun than working in jotters!

 Cross Country Trials!

The teams were selected and from p7b the people who got in were;

Ava, Logan, Maddie, Alice, Arwen, Ruby, Harry & Joe. Well done!

Lenin and Lewis
We enjoyed circle time because it was fun to show people our emotions and feelings. We enjoyed maths too because it was very fun making posters for data handling to show what we knew already about data handling.

We were good at P.E. because our control and balance was very good. And the activities were fun too.

Our target is to work on our handwriting because it is not as good as some people in our class.

P2b SEAL Maths – December

This week in our maths we have been counting forwards and backwards in tens all the way up to 100. We are also learning about odd and even numbers and counting in twos. We are getting really good at knowing our number bonds to 10 and figuring out all the different ways we can make a number.

6.12.16

We have been working on knowing the number that comes before and after a given number. At our written station we were writing in the missing number on our ‘number ladder’.

At our ICT station we were working on ‘Line em Up’ app and were ordering numbers in the correct order.

7.12.16

Today in maths we were working with the ‘rick racks’ to help us with our number bonds, doubles, near doubles and counting in groups. We were also working on our five patterns.

David’s Learning Log

L.I.to show what I have been learning this week.

This week in maths we went round different tables doing different tasks. I found it pretty easy. My favourite task was the smart board. We got to do times tables games and 3d shapes on Education City.

In BIG writing we wrote a letter to someone saying what we are enjoying so far in p6a. I wrote mine to my little cousin Isla saying each thing we do and I wrote down everyone’s jobs.

This week I enjoyed doing my 3D hand and the Iron Man pictures.

Also Hibs came to school and showed us the Scottish cup and we were singing Hibs songs. Martin Boyle came as the player we were all really happy it was him.

We also had band auditions. I would really like to play trombone. We got a shot of each instrument and the trombone suited me most.
