LANGUAGE IS DEVELOPED THROUGH A PROGRAMME OF WORK INVOLVING LISTENING, TALKING, READING AND WRITING.
Opportunities are sought to encourage and celebrate children’s achievement in all aspects of language work. For example; entering writing competitions, display of writing in class, creating booklets for younger readers, performances of poetry and plays to name but a few.
Beginning in nursery, teachers create a rich language environment. Literacy skills are taught through a multi sensory approach. Pupil Support Assistants and volunteers regularly work with P1 and P2 to support literacy learning.
In school, the emphasis in our teaching of reading is on achieving a balance between developing strategies for decoding text and the search for meaning. We teach reading in a systematic, structured way.
Each class has it’s own library and children can choose from a wide range of fiction and information books. We also have a school library where children are encouraged to visit and take books out to support their reading for enjoyment. We encourage all pupils, and families, to utilise local libraries to further support this.
In written language the children are encouraged to write fluently and effectively for a range of purposes. Pupils are introduced to different styles of writing and are encouraged to self and peer assess their writing. The necessary skills of spelling, punctuation, language structure and cursive handwriting are taught in a systematic way.
MODERN LANGUAGES
All children are now expected to have exposure to 2 foreign languages. At Hermitage Park all children from Nursery to P7 will have exposure to French, while learners in P5, P6 and 7 will also have the opportunity to learn Spanish. During the course of the year some children from P4 and P5 will also have a block of teaching in Mandarin.
Scots
Each year pupils will learn to read, write, and recite in Scots. A progressive program has been created to systematically develop children’s confidence while using the dialect. Some pupils from each year stage recite poems during our whole school Scots Assembly held every year.
